Ex Hockey Player Steve Downie Sues For Insurance Citing Loss of Brain Function

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - ESPN

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Jan 7 – Steve Downie sued Lloyd's Underwriters because he can no longer be a professional hockey player due, his lawyers says, to his "loss of brain function."

On January 7, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Debra C. Freeman held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

Downie played forward for the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins and Arizona Coyotes. Then to the minor leagues, the American Hockey League's Springfield Thunderbirds in Massachusetts.

An issue was how to depose in Canada. Judge Freeman said to hurry it along.

She gave one final extension of time for this. Downie's lawyers said, "Deposition preparation is very difficult to do remotely with someone in Mr. Downie's condition."

The case is Downie v. Lloyd's Underwriters et al., 19-cv-6620 (Freeman)
