In SDNY Alleged Defrauder of Greek Orthodox Church Gets Bail As Press Investigation Continues

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC The Times (UK) Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Nov 12 – When the former executive director of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in America Jerome Dimitriou was presented on November 25 before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger, he was still in the checked shirt he was wearing when arrested at 6 am.

He left the Archdiocese in 2017 and has for some unspecified period since negotiated with the US Attorney's office about his use of funds in the position. His retained lawyer Nathaniel Marmur on November 25 cited a 24-month sentencing guideline if guilty.

Assistant US Attorney Michael Neff said that was never offered, and that further investigation might result in an increase to their estimate of a sentencing guideline of 51 to 71 months, or 41 to 51 if acceptance of responsibility, that is, a guilty plea.

Judge Lehrburger bailed Dimitriou for $150,000 with two co-signers and a gun to be turned in on or before November 26. He left pre-trial supervision "as directed," saying it is up to them.

Afterward Inner City Press asked Dimitrou's lawyer Nathanial Marmur how long the negotiations with the US Attorney's Office continued. While that was not answered on the record, to his credit he said his client has been dedicated to the Church and looks forward to all the facts coming out. The case is US v. Demitriou, 19-mj-11034 (Lehrburger).

Just before, Judge Lehrburger appointed Marmur as publicly paid CJA lawyer for a client named, phonetically, Candace Cooper. Judge Lehrburger's courtroom deputy did not announce any docket number for that case or appointment, seeming more focused on a violation of recording protocol by a Court employee earlier in the Fall.

Inner City Press covers the SDNY and Mag court within the boundary of all rules but will not be intimidated to prevent coverage. We may have more on this - but we hope note. Watch this site.
