In SDNY Crispin Haltingly Pleads Guilty After US Says Racial Targeting Issues Dismissed

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Decrypt - LightRead - Honduras - Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Feb 21 – Angel Crispin was charged with the armed robbery of a drug dealer in The Bronx; he sought to introduce evidence of racial bias and targeting. This was shot down on February 3. And on February 21 Angel Crispin came to plead guilty before Judge Rakoff to plead guilty.

Inner City Press, which covers the racial disparities case(s) and issue, was there. There is (much) more to be said about this case and issue. But this guilty plea, unlike the February 18 plead of co-defendent Amaurys Hernandez, did not go smoothly.

Crispin gave different answers about whether he had a doctor - his lawyer said he got pills, but it was not clear if from a doctor - and Judge Rakoff almost called off the plea. But then, including with encouragement from Crispin's significant other the only person in the gallery other than Inner City Press, it got back and track.

Crispin faces a guideline of 188 to 235 months. His sentencing is set for May 2 at 4 pm. Judge Rakoff said that the defendant must himself answer the questions for the pre-sentencing report. The case is US v. Crispin, 19-cr-323 (Rakoff).
