In SDNY In Person Suppression Hearing Has Witnesses in Shields  Bronx Miranda Questions

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, July 22 – Vance Collins was arrested on murder for hire charges in front of his residence on Barnes Avenue in The Bronx. Law enforcement before Mirandizing him searched the house and found guns.

On July 22 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge P. Kevin Castel held an in-person suppression hearing, in Courtroom 26B of 500 Pearl Street. Inner City Press attended and covered it.

The law enforcement witnesses spoke with plastic shields, from the jury box. When documents to refresh recollection were shown by defense counsel, a protocol of gloves was followed.  Inner City Press live tweeted it:

Judge Castel is holding an in-person suppression hearing about raid on the Bronx house of murder for hire defendant, who is here. As is Inner City Press. FBI witness in mask and gloves.

This hearing, which began at 11 am, is still going - defendant Collins on the stand.

AUSA: Did you tell the officers not to enter your house? Collins: I wouldn't have, I was handcuffed.  AUSA: Are you aware of automatic weapons?  Collins: I've seen them on TV

AUSA: This 44 revolver, that was in your mother's old room? Collins: Yes, Ma'am. AUSA: Where was your girlfriend? Collins: Still in the bedroom, in the basement. Officers were yelling at her.

AUSA: Did you tell law enforcement that the .44 revolver you possessed was not for religious purposes?  Collins: No I did not.  [A possibly related prior Inner City Press story, here

Collins' lawyer: The defense rests. May I make a proposal?  Judge Castel: Sure.

Collins' lawyer: We'll order the transcript and get 10 days to put in anything pithy.

AUSA: If simultaneous briefing, an opportunity to be heard before you decide?

Judge Castel: Transcript by Friday. US by Aug 4, defense by Aug 13.

The case is US v. Collins, 19-cr-395 (Castel)
