Man Sued NYC For Police Beating Him in SRO As He Cooked Now City Is Asked For Video

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Maxwell Book
BBC-Guardian UK - Honduras - ESPN NY Mag

SDNY COURTHOUSE, April 11 – Shamark Williams sued the City of New York after he was assaulted by police in the SRO he lived in, at 530 West 78th Street, Apartment 5J, while he cooked a veggie burger and rice.

On April 4, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York  Judge Colleen McMahon held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

Williams had a lawyer, but now doesn't. Judge McMahon noted that happens sometimes when such a case in not settled in mediation.

She told Williams he must now prepare to litigate, if necessary on his own. He said he will. The case was referred to Magistrate Judge Stuart D. Aaron.

On April 11 Magistrate Judge Aaron held a proceeding and Inner City Press again covered it. Judge Aaron asked Williams if he understood why the defense lawyer said he is not representing the individual defendant PO Michaeel Vaccaro - he had not been served. Williams spoke about having his hands behind his back. He wants the video.

Judge Aaron has order the City to file a letter by April 29 whether it has any body camera footage, and to attended a settlement conference on May 26 at 2 pm.

The case is Williams v. Vaccaro, et al., 19-cv-3548 (McMahon)
