Angola Cites Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act To Help GE Get Stay of Discovery in SDNY

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - ESPN

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 31 – Aenergy, S.A. sued Angola and others - but the country cited the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act and co-defendants General Electric brought in the big guns for a stay of discovery.

On October 30 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge John P. Cronan held a lengthy proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

While the plaintiffs' discovery request was about and against GE, the Angolan government, well known from the Luanda Leaks which Inner City Press also covered, urged a stay of everything.

GE was more limited, citing forum non conveniens. Ultimately citing case law Judge Cronan eruditely stayed discovery.

The case is Aenergy, S.A. et al v. Republic of Angola et al., 20-cv-3569 (Cronan)
