On UN Hedge Fund Heavy Carnegie Council Bemoans Negative Coverage of Guterres While Ignoring UN Censorship

By Matthew Russell Lee

UNITED NATIONS, May 30 – The United Nations under Antonio Guterres provides fewer and fewer answers, restricts the critical Press and on May 30 canceled a rare Guterres press encounter while promoting one a full four weeks in the future. On the same day, a piece by the law firm and hedge fund heavy Carnegie Council bemoaned negative coverage of the UN while uncritically quoting officials who are involved in blocking and restricting the Press that actually covers the UN.

The piece runs a quote that the UN “creates material that can be used, shared, and amplified," said Maher Nasser, the UN director of outreach. "This happens in different ways and is done by different stakeholders, like the media industry, celebrities, the NGO sector, the academia, and of course, on social media platforms." It neglects to mention that Nasser blocks Inner City Press on the social media platform Twitter, and through his spurious complaint is responsible, along with UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric, for banning Inner City Press' use of the social media platform Periscope on the UN's 38th floor.

The piece says “when António Guterres became the ninth UN Secretary-General in January 2017, the organization gained a CEO better suited to deal with the challenging questions of reporters—although correspondents have complained that he does not appear nearly often enough in front of the press corps at UN headquarters.” But the link for the “complaint” is, tellingly, to an article about Ban Ki-moon.

Guterres' “Global Communicator” Alison Smale, who has refused for nine months to respond to a 5000 signature petition from the Free UN Coalition for Access about her restrictions on Inner City Press and the lack of any content neutral media access rules, is tellingly not even mentioned. Even those who work for her rarely see her.

The piece equated the pro-Guterres UNCA with the UN press corps; the UNCA board recently accepted pan-seared corvina and wine from Guterres without asking him about press restrictions much less corruption or sexual harassment in the UN.

Meanwhile, for daring to cover an event of UNCA held in the UN Press Briefing Room, to cover if they discussed the indictment for UN bribery of Ng Lap Seng whose funds UNCA accepted while providing a venue for Ng's photos with the UN Secretary General, Inner City Press was evicted and remains restricted to minders to this day.
