The
Assistant US
Attorney based
his argument
on risk of
flight,
emphasizing
trips to
China, and
Morrow-Wu's
rap sheet. His
Federal
Defender said
that
conditions for
release could
be crafted.
Judge
Gorenstein
after a break
had ordered
Morrow-Wu
detained,
citing his
previously
violations of
trust and
absconding,
but offered
release to
Shengzhen Wu
if he can find
two financial
responsible
people as
co-signers on
a $50,000
bond; $5000
cash must be
put up, he
ruled. He did
not bar the
spouses from
communicating.
On
June 7, 2023,
Matthew
Morrow-Wu's
bail appeal
was heard. His
Federal
Defender had
put into the
record a
handwritten
note to him,
"Hey white
boy, I like
you and I hear
your [sic]
gay... I will
approach you
when the time
is
right."
Judge
Hellerstein
was amenable
to release on
bail - and
asked that it
be before the
end of the
day.
On
November 13,
2023,
Morrow-Wu's
request to
postpone a
court date for
COVID was
denied:
"ENDORSED
LETTER as to
(23-Cr-90-1)
Matthew
Morrow-Wu
addressed to
Judge Alvin K.
Hellerstein
dated November
13, 2023 re: I
write to
inform the
Court that
Matthew Morrow
Wu tested
positive this
morning for
Strep A and
COVID-19 (test
results
attached as
Exhibit A). He
will be unable
to attend the
conference
scheduled for
Wednesday,
November 15. I
ask that the
Court adjourn
the conference
specifically
for Matthew
Morrow Wu for
at least two
weeks to a
date in early
December when
he can safely
attend Court.
I consent to
the exclusion
of time until
the next
status
conference.
ENDORSEMENT:
Denied.
Defense
counsel shall
appear. Def't
Matthew Morrow
Wu may appear,
if he wishes,
by audio or
video link. If
he so chooses,
he should
notify
Chambers via
email as soon
as possible,
and Chambers
will send a
link which
Morrow Wu can
use. SO
ORDERED.
(Signed by
Judge Alvin K.
Hellerstein on
11/13/2023)
