SDNY COURTHOUSE,
March 16 – Saul Polanco-Gomez,
detained awaiting trial on
charges of illegal re-entry,
asked for a second time to be
released on bond.
On March
15, 2023 U.S. District Court
for the Southern District of
New York Judge John P. Cronan
convened a bail review
proceeding. Inner City Press
went and covered it.
Polanco-Gomez had been denied
release on his first request
in this case, by Magistrate
Judge Robert W. Lehrburger.
District Judge Cronan said he
would review it de novo,
because that is the standard
and also some circumstance had
changed.
But not
enough.
Judge
Cronan recited a series of
illegal re-entries from the
Dominican Republic dating back
to 2009. He said defendant's
ties to the community - a
cousin and friends - were not
enough to not make him a risk
of flight, in his desire to
stay in the US.
Judge
Cronan said he ordered
continued detention, then
turned to what he said should
be an early trial date.
The
Federal Defender countered
that her client now wanted to
plea guilty, to a Pimintel
letter, next week. It will be
next Tuesday at 10 am.
The case is
USA v. Polanco-Gomez,
22-cr-488 (Cronan)
