Two Charged With Armed Robbery of Bronx Jeweler 1 Got 90 Months US Asks 157 on 2d

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, April 4 – Russell Johnson was arrested at 6 am on January 23, 2024 and federally charged with the armed robbery of a Bronx jewelry store more than two years before.

At 5 pm on January 23 he was before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Valerie Figueredo. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag court.

Johnson's CJA lawyer argued that his client previously showed up for court dates, and has a sister with a good job in laminated flooring and a home that could be put up to secure a bond.

Judge Figueredo initially inquired into third party custodian, then took a break with Pre-Trial Services in the robing room. When she came back, she said the US had met its burden and ordered Johnson detained pending trial.

On October 30 he pled guilty to Counts 2 and 3 of the lesser included charge, and count 4 of the indictment. Sentencing was set for April 8, 2025 at 3 pm.

On December 13 Johnson's lawyer wrote in, recounting buying him Sour Patch Kids in the MDC, asking for 60 months.

On January 2 the US Attorney's Office wrote in asking for 130 months; sentencing was set for January 8.

And on that day he was sentenced to 90 months in prison, as close to NYC as possible, with RDAP recommended.

On co-defendant Patillo, the US Attorney's Office wrote in on April 4 asking for 157 - on top of 38 months he will serve on a related conviction in Virginia that will not be credited toward his future sentence. This sentencing is scheduled for April 10.

The overall case is USA v. Patillo, et al., 1:23-cr-539 (Furman)
