SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
July 25 – Luis Guzman
was arrested and released on
bail in July 2021 in a
narcotics case. Then in
August 2022 he absconded.
A warrant was
issued but he could not be
found. Until November 28, 2023
when he was arrested in
Georgia, and slowly
transported to New York,
seemingly via Oklahoma.
On January
4, 2024 Guzman appeared before
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Magistrate Judge James L.
Cott. Inner City Press was
there, the only media in the
SDNY Mag Court.
The AUSA said the
assigned District Judge Paul
A. Engelmayer had set a
conference for January 19,
with a new charge: bail
jumping. Guzman was detained
on consent, and Speedy Trial
Act time was excluded.
Jump cut to July
25, 2024, when the US
Attorney's Office wrote in
asking for 24 months, below
the guideline of 70 to 87
months, bumped up by the
absconding. Sentencing is set
for August 8.
The case is US v.
Guzman, 21-cr-723 (Engelmayer
/ Cott)
