Man With 2 Names Facing 18 Months for Illegal Reentry Now July 14 Set by Judge Subramanian

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, June 26 –  A man facing sentencing for illegal reentry of the United States was up for sentencing on June 24 before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Arun Subramanian. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the courtroom.

The man was listed in the docket under one name, which he used when posing as in Italian tourist, while his Federal Defender referred to him by another name, saying he is from the Dominican Republic.

The Federal Defender expressed surprise at the government's request for 18 months in prison, and said there are cases at odds with that. Judge Subramanian, after a day presiding over the US v. Sean Combs trial, re-set sentencing for Friday at 5:30 pm (closing arguments in Combs may stretch to 5; Inner City Press is covering both).

Late on June 24 the Federal Defender submitted a list of sentencings by Judges Gardephe, Engelmayer, Oetken, Broadrick, Torres, Carter and Crotty (RIP).   His earlier letter alleged human rights violations in the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center, an ICE-used privately-run immigration detention facility in Philipsburg, PA.

On June 25, Judge Subramanian docketed that "to afford time for consideration of the issues raised, the sentencing will be rescheduled to the earliest possible date after defense counsel's return." Letter by June 27 at noon.

On June 26 Judge Subramanian set the date: "as to Ramon Rodriguez Martinez - The sentencing will now take place on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM. (Signed by Judge Arun Subramanian on 6/26/2025)

This case is entitled USA v. Martinez, 1:25-cr-104 (Subramanian)
