COURTHOUSE,
May 2 – In Hunts Point in The
Bronx a complaint was filed
about a shooter, described as
a "Hispanic man wearing a
white T-shirt, black pants and
bleeding from the face," back
on November 20, 1994.
On May 2,
2025 he came to plead guilty
before U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Judge Jed S. Rakoff.
Inner City Press was there,
the only media in the
courtroom.
Judge
Rakoff asked the defendant to
allocute but things were still
not clear. His Federal
Defender offered that her
client had found the gun in
the garbage while collecting
cans to turn in for deposits,
then used it after he was
beaten up while buying or
trying to buy marijuana.
When Judge Rakoff expressed
some skepticism about a loaded
gun being found in the
garbage, the Federal Defender
said this is not uncommon in
Hunts Point, though she
wouldn't entirely know since
she's not collecting cans --
not yet, she added,
joking.
Sentencing
was set for August 5 at 11
am.
The case is
USA v. Velez, 1:25-cr-78
(Rakoff)
