SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Jan 27 – For jewelry
store
robberies in
the Bronx and
Manhattan in
2021, Johntae
Byrd and Malik
Townsend were
arraigned
on
December 6,
2022, before
U.S. District
Court for the
Southern
District of
New York Judge
Gregory H.
Woods.
Inner
City Press
went and
covered it,
the only media
in the
courtroom.
Also in the
gallery were
family of the
defendants
including a
small child.
Townsend's
counsel said
he has a trial
in February
2023 before
Judge Rakoff,
whom he noted
is usually
fast, but
still
requested a
conference
date in his
case later
than March 2.
But March 2 it
is, at 11 a.m.
Byrd's
Federal
Defender
agreed to push
back his
conference to
coincide with
co-defendant
Townsend's,
and to allow
discussion of
a pre-trial
resolution.
The
AUSA began to
describe the
evidence,
including
videos and pen
registers and
some 90,000
pages, but
Judge Woods
said that
wasn't
necessary at
this stage. He
issued the
5(f) order.

cut a week to
December 13,
2022.
Co-defendant
Tyquan Goodlet
was arraigned
by Magistrate
Judge James L.
Cott - by
Microsoft
Teams. He was
informed of
the charges,
including an
August 5, 2022
jewelry store
robbery in The
Bronx.
The AUSA said
that while
Goodlet was
not allowed in
the
courthouse, he
was at the
FBI's office.
On consent, he
was released
on $50,000
unsecured bond
to be
co-signed by
two financial
responsible
people in two
weeks.
On
June 12, 2023,
Malik Townsend
was up for
sentencing. He
is already
serving 11
years for
attempted
murder; Judge
Woods, after
hearing of a
very difficult
childhood,
imposed a 46
month
statement, 36
months
concurrent.
On
November 20,
2023, Larry
Brand who had
been added to
the case was
sentenced to
36 months.
Jump
cut to January
27, 2025 when
the US
Attorney's
Office wrote
in on
co-defendant
Goodlet asking
for 24 months;
sentencing is
set for
February 3.
The
case is US v.
Byrd, et al.,
22-cr-497
(Woods)
