SDNY COURTHOUSE,
Sept 11 –Amin Butler was
charged with selling a kilo of
heroin laced with fentanyl in
The Bronx in May 2021. Now he
wanted to plead guilty. But he
is in a wheelchair, and in
custody.
On
September 16, 2022, U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Lewis J. Liman held a
proceeding. Inner City Press
covered it.
It was
agreed that Butler would be in
Judge Liman's courtroom 15C on
September 27, 2022 at 10 am to
plead guilty.
Jump cut to
September 11, 2023, when Amin
Butler was up for sentencing
before Judge Liman. The
guideline was 108 to 135
months. Amin Butler, speaking
movingly for himself, said "I
know I broke their hearts." At
least two women in the gallery
sobbed.
Judge
Liman, after a break,
expressed sympathy but
emphasized that he had to go
on evidence, not works. He
sentenced Butler to 96 months
- eight years. There was more
crying, and some goodbyes,
before Butler left in
non-elective wheelchair.
The case is US
v. Butler, 21-cr-621
(Liman)
