Javaid Iqbal Pleads Guilty to Money Laundering After SDNY Case against Him Sealed 2 Years

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 13 – Javaid Iqbal was charged with running an unlicensed money transmittal business, and money laundering.

That was in September 2020. But the case remained sealed for two and a half years.

On March 8, 2023 Iqbal appeared without any public notice before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein. Inner City Press, which is often the only civilian in the SDNY Magistrates Court, was there.

Iqbal pled guilty, in a mixture of Urdu (though a court interpreter) and English. Judge Gorenstein told him to choose one way of communicating or the other. Iqbal chose to continue through the Urdu interpreter. The complaint says he communicated with the Confidential Source in Punjabi.

Sentencing was set for September 13, 2023 at 2 pm.  But for days after, the case was still not in PACER.

Docketed on March 13, the case is US v. Iqbal, 23-cr-121 (Kaplan / Gorenstein)
