SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 13 –
Amid the crisis at New York
City's Rikers Island, the NYC
Commission of Corrections was
summoned to a November 17,
2022 in-person hearing on a
request to move to appoint a
Federal receiver for the
facility, at the U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York.
That request was
denied. Inner City Press live
tweeted it, here
and below, and before streamed in Foley
Square and in
front of SDNY (here
and here),
then uploaded
video of the Close
Rikers protest and an
impromptu Q&A with NYC
public advocate Juumane
Williams, here.
Here is the thread.
On August 10, the
hearing. Inner City Press live

Chief Judge
Swain: The Court is focused on
structural reform.
On May 13, 2025
Chief Judge Swain ruled
including "the Court will
appoint an independent Nunez
Remediation Manager who will
report only to this Court and
be empowered to cure
Defendants’ contempt and
support the Commissioner’s
remediation of the Defendants’
outstanding noncompliance with
the remaining provisions of
the Nunez Court Orders. The
Remediation Manager and the
Commissioner will, together,
address the ongoing violations
of the constitutional rights
of people in custody in the
City’s jails. The Court finds
that such relief is narrowly
drawn, extends no further than
necessary to correct
Defendants’ violations of the
Nunez Court Orders, as
documented by the Contempt
Order dated November 27, 2024,
and, particularly in light of
the contemplated collaboration
between the Nunez Remediation
Manager and the Commissioner,
is the least intrusive means
necessary to correct the
violation of these federal
rights. When the Court
has selected the Nunez
Remediation Manager, the Court
shall enter an order."

Back on April 26
a conference took place
between 2 pm and 4:15 pm - but
by video. Inner City Press
live tweeted it here.
The case is Nunez
v. N.Y.C. Department of
Correction, et al., 11-cv-5845
