For 9 Kilo Meth Deal 1 Defendant Released But 2 Detained, Walked for Guatemala, House in DR

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Sept 8 – For a drug deal involving nine kilograms of meth, three defendants were presented on September 8, 2023.

One was ordered released on bond, the other two detained, by U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Valerie Figueredo.  Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag Court.

The first was Kevin Amaya, who had in the courtroom gallery his step father, who spoke, his mother, and his father. He is from Colombia but has some immigration status. The Assistant US Attorney said he faced deportation, but with three signatures he was ordered released on bond.

The next, Jose Guerrero, did not fare as well. He is from the Dominican Republic and already convicted once for illegal reentry of the US. This time, his Federal Defender said, he got a visa from the Dominican Republic to Guatemala then walked to the US from there.  He was ordered detained.

The last was Pablo Hernandez-Rodriguez. His problem was that he owns a $60,000 property in the Dominican Republic - somehow, he also got a free lawyer - and Judge Figueredo found him a risk of flight. He was detained.

The case is US v. Guerrero, et al., 23-mj-6337 (Figueredo)
