After Protest at Senegal Consulate Went Bad Diop Was Told to Stay Away Now Asks No Jail

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 28 –    Saliou Diop was arrested on September 19, 2023 for having destroyed property in Senegal's consulate and UN Mission during a protest.

Diop was presented before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Jennifer E. Willis on September 20. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag Court. [Earlier in the day, it did its best to cover the UN General Assembly week in which Senegal's Macky Sall is.]

Judge Willis asked the AUSA if consular notification was required, ironic in this case. The AUSA said it is not mandatory, and that Diop had waived it.

She added that the US agreed to release on $10,000 bond - and stay away from the Senegal consulate and mission.  The Federal Defender added if Diop needs to go there, permission will be sought.

Jump cut to October 25, 2024, when Diop's Federal Defender wrote in asking for no jail time, and the AUSA asked for two years probation, on October 30.

The case is now  US v. Diop, 24-cr-468  (Willis)
