SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
Aug 13 – Based on arrests for
a conspiracy to sell stolen
vehicles, U.S. District Court
for the Southern District of
New York Magistrate Judge Gary
Stein on August 1 held a
series of presentments,
detaining one. Inner City
Press was there, the only
media in the SDNY courtroom.
Jeffery Montgomery had been
arrested at 4:45 in the
morning - meaning, picked up
from custody. He consented to
detention. By contrast, the
SDNY prosecutors offered
$50,000 bond bail to another
defendant, while opposing
release for another with, they
said, a history of leading
NYPD on car
chases.
Judge Stein
did not find grounds for
detention, instead imposing
the same $50,000 unsecured
bond and saying that a Port
Chester warrant should be
dealt with.
On August 6,
co-defendant Eric Santana was
before the week's Magistrate
Judge, Jennifer E. Willis. She
noted that he had appeared for
court dates in the past, and
ordered him released on
$50,000 bond.
On August 13, the
case was indicted and wheeled
out to Chief Judge Laura
Taylor Swain.
The case is US v.
Montgomery, et al., 24-cr-479
(Swain)
