SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
Sept 16 – For days Inner City
Press had heard from its
sources there would be a
"takedown" on February 6, each
SDNY Magistrate Judge would
handle seven to 10 defendants.
Arrests happen at
6 am. So at 5:55 am Inner City
Press tweeted it, first to X
subscribers with the spoiler
alert: the expectation was
that each of the current or
former NYCHA employees would
be released on bond the same
day.
And then hours
later at 9:39 am the
prosecutors announced it.
Media rushed around reporting
it. Inner City Press had
it first, and after discretely
waiting, published it first.
Then this thread of
presentments, here.
On September 16,
as other defendants cite the
Supreme Court's Snyder
decision, defendant Deshon
Hopkins who pled guilty to
taking $13,500 from two
contractors was up for
sentencing. Inner City Press
was there, thread:
Defense lawyer:
He lost his NYCHA job, now
works elsewhere. He took less
than others and pled guilty
quickly. Others have gotten 33
months and 20 months, that
sent the general deterence
message.
AUSA: Non
incarceratory sentences for
contractors accomplished
nothing at NYCHA. Defense:
Lucas got no jail time. I also
represented Mr Escobar. People
still commit white collar
crimes after the Madoff
sentence
Judge: Do I
correctly understand that BOP
will no longer house those
with sentences in
MDC-Brooklyn? AUSA: Yes. We
have that through official
channels. Judge: I sentence
you to 4 months imprisonment
and $13,500 forfeiture
Judge: Also,
three months home detention,
after the four months in
prison [not in the MDC]
The case is US v.
Hopkins, 24-cr-201 (Swain)
