Steven Woo Facing Money Laundering Charges Is a Pauper So Alternative Resolution Sought

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Maxwell book

SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 2 – Steven Woo was charged in a money laundering conspiracy in 2019. Now there are questions about his competency, and if his prosecution should continue.

On March 2, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Sidney H. Stein held a proceeding. Inner City Press went and covered it.

Woo's lawyer Eric R. Breslin of Duane Morris was advocating for mental capacity testimony by Zoom. He said Woo is 74 years old now and lives in a garage, basically a "pauper."

He said the government must have some reason for proceeding against Woo, but he can't discern why.   Judge Stein asked for an answer.

The Assistant US Attorney said Woo had picked up the cash, but seemed to say that some re-consideration may be taking place.

Judge Stein ordered the defense to submit a request for an alternative resolution, and scheduled a status conference for April 12 at 11 am.

The case is US v. Woo, 21-cr-343 (Stein)
