Man Arrested with Cash Crack and Gun in Soundview Got 5 Years US Opposes Reduction

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 9 – John Grant was arrested in the Soundview Houses in The Bronx with crack, $10,000 cash and a loaded .45 in his apartment.

On April 17, 2023 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Sidney H. Stein held his sentencing proceeding. Inner City Press went and covered it.

Grant spoke for himself, haltingly and movingly. He said he wanted to see his two year old son. Judge Stein said what he'd read was from the heart and he would go below guidelines, to 60 months.

Grant said, This is the worst day of my life.    Judge Stein pointed out he had already served 21 months and could be eligible for "good time."

He advised him to get out, see his son, get a job.

Jump cut to August 9, 2024 when the US Attorney's Office wrote in opposing Grant's bid for a reduction - acknowledging he is statutorily eligible for a reduction up to 3 months but citing US v Calk.

The case is US v. Grant, 21-cr-486 (Stein)
