Man Out on Bail For Illegal Reentry of US Cut Off GPS Now Pleads Guilty Sentencing Aug 12

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, May 9 – A man out on bail while charged with illegal re-entry of the United States cut off his ankle monitor. He was arrested and sought bail on April 18 before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave. Inner City Press was there, the only media in the SDNY Mag court.

The man's mother was in the courtroom, with a set of the interpreter's headphones on. Judge Cave said it pained her, but she had to order detention.

The mother cried, and was still crying as she left the courtroom. Six hours later, none of this was in the docket on PACER.

On April 29, a guilty plea was scheduled: "ORDER as to Luis Tavarez. A Change of Plea Hearing is set for May 8, 2025 at 2:30pm. (Signed by Judge Andrew L. Carter, Jr on 4/29/25)(jw)

On May 2 Federal Defenders wrote in asking for a medical order for medication at MDC, recounting that "in January 2025, days after the presidential inauguration, Mr. Tavarez spent a week in the hospital."

On May 8, Tavarez pled guilty to count 1, illegal reentry. Sentencing was set for August 12 at 2 pm. He remains detained.

The case is USA v. Tavarez, 1:24-cr-525 (Carter / Cave)
