SDNY COURTHOUSE,
May 22 – Shawn
Reid was
convicted in a
gang case and
sentenced to
30 months
imprisonment,
then three
years of
supervised
release.
On
March 7, 2022
while out on
supervision,
he was
arrested for
firing at a
car with a gun
fitted with a
high-capacity
magazine. He
pled guilty;
the
prosecutors'
deal had a
sentencing
guideline of
21 to 27
months.
Then
they asked for
96 to 120
months.
On May 22,
2023, U.S.
District Court
for the
Southern
District of
New York Judge
Lorna G.
Schofield held
Reid's
sentencing.
Inner City
Press was
there, the
only media in
the
courtroom.
Reid's family
members were
there
too.
Judge
Schofield
asked the
Assistant US
Attorney why
his office had
agreed to the
21 to 27 month
guideline.
He
replied that
he'd spoken
with the chief
of the
Criminal
Division and
that because
this was a
Federalized
felon in
possession
case, and Reid
had been fired
at fire, even
"pleading
open" would
have only
added three
months to the
guidelines.
Reid's
lawyer
emphasized the
harsh
conditions in
the MDC jail.
Reid when he
spoke thanked
his family
members, and
said he wanted
to rejoin them
and even
travel to
Jamaica, where
he's from.
Judge
Schofield
noted that she
had been given
no video
and that
neither side
had requested
a Fatico
hearing on any
dispute facts.
She sentenced
Reid to 24
months, 14
months of
which appear
to have
already been
served.
The
case is US v.
Reid,
22-cr-221
(Schofield)
