UN GATE,
June 19 – How corrupt
and decrepit has the UN system
become under Antonio Guterres,
in this case due to Guterres?
Inner City Press
is today publishing a letter
to the UN President of the
General Assembly trashing, in
overly diplomatic UN-ese,
Guterres bid to cut jobs to
try to preserve his own: "Dear
Mr. President, The staff
unions and associations of the
United Nations are closely
following the Secretary-
General's UN80 Initiative,
particularly his recent
dialogues with Member States
regarding the proposed
structural changes and budget
adjustments [which have]
raised questions about the
transparency of the measures,
their alignment with mandates,
and their possible impact on
program delivery in the field.
Several delegates
have expressed similar
concerns about the
implications of the proposed
changes on mandate delivery
and the engagement of United
Nations staff in this process.
It is essential to ensure that
staff voices are considered in
discussions that affect their
roles and working conditions.
Currently, consultations
appear to focus primarily on
implementation timelines and
possible mitigation measures.
In the spirit of collaboration
and our shared commitment to
effective mandate delivery,
and given that our
representative will not be
heard by the General
Assembly’s Fifth Committee
before the beginning of 2026,
we would like to express our
interest in engaging directly
with Member States, in line
with General Assembly
resolution 35/213. We are
eager to discuss an
appropriate modality to
facilitate such a dialogue."
How about firing Guterres, and
restoring the Press? Inner
City Press applied on June 19,
here.
What will
incoming PGA Annalena Baerbock
do, including on Press
freedom? Watch this site.
Guterres had the
critical Press roughed
up and thrown out. There
has been no due process since,
not even a response to Guterres'
Melissa Fleming to a pro bono inquiry
for Inner City Press from the
law firm Quinn Emanuel. We'll
have more on this.
