SDNY COURTHOUSE,
July 8 – Walter Gaddy for
failing to register as a sex
offender was sentenced to a
year and a day in prison in
2017. Now on supervised
release, he has gone
AWOL.
On July 8
at 11:30 am, U.S. District
Court for the Southern
District of New York Judge
Paul A. Engelmayer scheduled a
public proceeding, listing the
call-in line for press and
public in the docket. Inner
City Press called in, at 11:36
am. (There are, needless to
say, other cases including in
the SDNY.)
The AT&T
automated system asked, Please
speak your name. Done. Then
after a beep, Judge Engelmayer
asked, Who just called
in?
"Inner City
Press, not a participant.
Going on mute."
Judge Engelmayer
said, to the other
participants, Sorry for the
distraction, adding that he
urged those who call in to
join at the outset.
Would this
be akin to locking or blocking
the real-world courtroom room
six minutes into a proceeding?
Courts in the time of
COVID.
As it turned out,
Gaddy did not call in, and
talk turned to issuing a
warrant for his arrest.
Probation hasn't been in any
contact with him, they said,
since March 23. By 11:50 am
the proceeding had been
removed from the day's
Calendar Events on PACER.
The case is US v.
Gaddy, 17-cr-104 (Engelmayer)
