MDC Inmate Wants Out But SDNY Judge Carter Points To Alleged Drug Dealing on Phone

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - The Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, July 2 –  Brandon Johnson, incarcerated in the MDC prison in Brooklyn on drug charges, on July 2 asked U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Andrew L. Carter to free him to home incarceration during the Coronavirus pandemic. Inner City Press covered the proceeding.

Judge Carter asked,  Couldn't he deal drugs by phone from home?

Johnson's lawyer said that those who work in MDC have to get their own COVID testing. He said it is difficult or impossible to work with client on defense while he is in the MDC.

He downplayed his client Brandon Johnson's connections with  Honduras.

But Judge Carter ruled, I find the government has met its burden that he a risk of flight, and a danger to the community. I will not grant temporary release.

The case is US v. Johnson, 19-cr-828 (Carter)
