Nefy Mendez Charged With Robbing Bronx Barber Shop Released When Mother Speaks in SDNY Court

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Decrypt - LightRead - Honduras - Source

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Feb 3 – Nefy Mendez faced detention pending trial on charges of a New Years Eve armed robbery but was released on bond on February 3 by U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn.

The underlying complaint recounts Mendez and two others meeting in the lobby of a building on Davidson Avenue in The Bronx at 5:10 pm on December 31, 2019.  Mendez is described as "carrying a pair of blue pants that were not jeans."

At 6:30 pm on December 31, a barber shop was robbed of $2,800. Thereafter the three returned to Davidson Avenue. On January 30, SDNY Magistrate Judge James L. Cott sign the complaint and arrest warrants. On February 3, Mendez was presented.

Judge Netburn was in the middle of saying she could not find a way to release Mendez when Federal Defender Martin Cohen said that his mother was in the gallary (where Inner City Press was the only media). His mother spoke compellingly.

Judge Netburn concluded that Mendez could be released to a mental health program that Martin Cohen said he would find; a medical order was entered. The case is US v. Mendez, 20-mj-1113 (Netburn).
