Bail Denied To Bomba Charged With Narco Money Laundering Despite Support of Rabbi

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Feb 18 -- Emiliano Bomba is charged with money laundering for narco traffickers in Mexico. On February 21 he appeared with supporters including a Rabbi offering to put up his house as security, at a bond hearing before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Paul A. Engelmayer.

The underlying criminal case is before SDNY Judge Denise L. Cote. But she is away, and Judge Engelmayer is hearing her and others' cases.

Defense lawyer Telesforo Del Valle, Jr. proposed a bail package including the Rabbi's house; he said Bomba's mother has come to New York and rented an apartment.

Judge Engelmayer credited Del Valle's advocacy but said it would be easy for the Bomba family to forego the security deposit on the apartment, and even to pay back the Rabbi for his house if it were seized.

Assistant US Attorney Sebastian Swett cited annual revenue for Bomba of $800,000 to $1.4 million. Judge Engelmayer noted that Bomba has no ties to the United States and faces some ten years in prison is convicted.

So Judge Engelmayer denied the bail application. Bomba was taken away in shackled by the U.S. Marshals and Del Valle conferred with the family and Rabbi out in the hallway. The case is US v. Bomba, 19-cr-463 (Cote).
