Whittick Pleads To Tax Evasion for LEEBA and Himself, Gets 24 to 30 Month Guideline, Hiccup

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon
BBC - Guardian UK - Honduras - ESPN

SDNY COURTHOUSE, July 18 – Steven Whittick was treasurer of the Law Enforcement Employees Benevolent Association; he was charged with embezzlement, tax evasion and false statements.

On July 16, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge P. Kevin Castel held a change of plea proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

The US Attorney's Office,  which agreed not to pursue other charged and agreed to a sentencing guideline of 24 to 30 months, said in a press release that Whittick pleaded to charges of conspiring to evade more than $250,000 in federal taxes, including payroll taxes owed by LEEBA and its employees, and his own personal income taxes.

Whittick also pled guilty to lying to federal officers during the course of the investigation in this case.

LEEBA is a labor union that represents certain law enforcement officers employed by the City, including officers from DEP, the City Department of Sanitation, and the City Department of Transportation.

The only hiccup, otherwise unnoted, was Whittick initially not saying he knew it was illegal at the time.

His lawyer quickly got it back on track. This was not mentioned in the prosecutors' subsequent press release. Sentencing is set for November 17.

The overall case is US v. Wynder, Jr. et al., 20-cr-470 (Castel)
