As Iranian Employee Sued NYC DEC For Discrimination He Says He Is Left Hanging

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Maxwell book
BBC - Honduras - CIA Trial book - NY Mag

SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 17 – Paul Shargani sued the New York City Department Of Environmental Protection for discriminating against him as an Iranian employee.

On February 3, 2023 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York  Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

DEP had complained that Shargani was not complying with its discovery requests. In the proceeding explanations were given and accepted.

And after the conference an order went into the docket denying DEC's motion as procedurally defective for not have attached a copy of the discovery request.

On March 17, 2023, Judge Hellerstein held another proceeding in the case. Inner City Press again covered it. Now DEP was complaining about Shargani not complying with discovery. Shargani replied, What does how many kids he has had have to do with the case? Judge Hellerstein said the discovery must be complied with and completed before the case can move forward.

The next proceeding is set for June 2, 2023 at 10 am. Inner City Press called in at that time, and so did Shargani. But after two proceedings, the multi-case conference was ended. Shargani remained on that line saying "Hello? Hello?" Finally a New York City Law Department lawyer told him she would call Chambers. But she never got back on; Shargani remained on, asking, Do I hang up now?

Judge Hellerstein's multi-case Fridays are always interesting and this case is sure to resurface on a coming Friday.

The case is Shargani v. New York City Department of Environmental Protection et al., 21-cv-337 (Hellerstein)
