SDNY COURTHOUSE,
June 14 – There was a
Violation Memorandum from U.S.
Pre-Trial Services about
Shakur Pinder filed on March
12, 2020 - before Coronavirus
shut down the U.S. District
Court of the Southern District
of New York courthouse.
On May 19,
2020 SDNY Judge Vernon S.
Broderick held a proceeding
with Pinder. Inner City Press
covered it.
Other than a new case in New
Jersey, Judge Broderick was
told, Pinder was largely
complying with the terms of
his release. In fact, his
lawyer said he was eager to
enter a guilty plea.
Jump cut more
than four years later to June
14, 2024, Inner City Press the
only media in the SDNY
Magistrates Court, thread:
OK - now at bail
hearing on defendant arrested
for gun and "ammo feeding
device" in Brooklyn, after a
previous felony. He is asking
to be released; three lawyers
went into the holding cell to
meet with him.
Assistant US
Attorney: He fired a gun, it's
on surveillance video. Then he
fled the police. Judge: Was
the area residential? AUSA:
Don't know. He fled into the
restaurant. Judge: Where there
people in the restaurant?
AUSA: I don't know.
CJA defense
lawyer: We can show that my
client was arrested in
Brooklyn - and he made bail.
His mother put up $30,000
against the $300,000 bond.
She's willing to sign a bond
here as well. She's a teacher
and makes $100,000 a year
Defense lawyer:
He was released on that bond.
And three days later was
arrested on a warrant issued
by the Probation Department.
It's curious. He'd done 4
years of probation, due to
expire November 2024 - in
fact, it was about to be ended
early.
Defense lawyer:
We say, It was not him running
from the police and shooting
in the air. His mother could
come today to sign the bond.
She has a house that she owns
that's worth $500,000; she has
a mortgage of $300,000. He
wants to be out for Father's
Day
Defense lawyer:
My client was outside a deli,
he had bought some food, he's
known them -- Defendant: No,
it was-- Judge: Don't be
disrespectful to your lawyer.
You're not helping yourself.
Defendant: Can I talk? Judge:
Speaking to your lawyer.
Defense
lawyer: He works at a
barbershop near there.
AUSA: They have not overcome
the presumption. When
the officer arrived, the
defendant put the run near his
waistband then ran, throwing
the gun into a yard. Defense:
We dispute that. The gun was
in a yard
Judge: What
is the source of this info?
Probation: It comes straight
from the police report.
Judge: He threw the gun into
then went into the restaurant?
Probation: He ran into the
restaurant then went out the
back - then threw the gun
Judge: Get the police report
[While Probation
goes out to get the report,
the lead defense lawyer speaks
with two other lawyers. The
defendant gestures for him to
come over.. Probation is back.
Judge reads it.]
Judge: I
need more information from the
government. So you will be
detained.
But there will be
follow up...
The case is US v.
Pinder, 19-cr-12 (Broderick /
Cave).
