SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
April 24 – National Basketball
Association referee Leroy
Richardson was denied a
religious exemption from COVID
vaccination, then was fired by
the NBA on September 1, 2022.
He sued.
On April
24, 2024, the initial
pre-trial conference was held
before U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Denise L. Cote. Inner
City Press was there, the only
media - and person - in the
courtroom gallery.
Judge Cote
asked if Richardson has asked
for an accommodation. The
NBA's lawyer said that, if the
case gets to that, the NBA
will argue that no
accommodation was possible.
She said that new referees
must enter through the G
League, and be vaccinated.
Richardson's lawyer said he
will have two theologians if
it gets to trial. Sued along
with the NBA are Neal Stern
and Byron
Spruel.
Mediation will be tried in
September. The plaintiff gets
seven depositions and the NBA
gets three.
The NBA's
also mentioned another case in
the District against the
League, by two referees and
one replay employee. This case
is Richardson v. NBA, et al.,
23-cv-6926 (Cote / Wang)
