COURTHOUSE,
June 17 – A six year prison
sentence was imposed on June
17 on Laura Perryman after at
trial she was convicted
in connection with a health
care fraud scheme whereby the
defendant created and sold a
fake medical device component
and told doctors that they
could claim approximately
$18,000 for implanting the
fake component into
patients.
Inner City Press
was present during the trial,
and at sentencing before U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Judge Denise L. Cote, who said
Perryman was an investor who
turned to fraud - then tried
to blame her young employees.
Perryman sobbed.
After the
sentence was announced
Perryman's lawyer asked for
bail pending appeal. Judge
Cote said she did not think
she would grant it but set a
briefing schedule.
Defense counsel
worried that she would lose
jurisdiction after the notice
of appeal is filed. So his
brief is due on June 19,
Juneteenth.
The case
is US v. Perryman, 23-cr-117
(Cote)
