Man Pled to Moving Meth to NY From Calexico Gets 72 Months as US Said 60 Months OK

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, May 9 – A man indicted for a conspiracy to transport meth from California to New York asked to be released on bail to his home in California near Calexico (and Mexicali) on June 26. Inner City Press was there, before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge P. Kevin Castel. Thread here:

OK- now at bail hearing on detained Alfredo Astorga; in SDNY Magistrates Court, his frequent crossing from Calexico to Mexicali were cited to detain him.

Defense tells District Judge it was for dental care.

AUSA says a man who has already pled guilty mailed $53,000 cash for meth to the address is asking to be bailed to. Next shipment was by cross-country drive, ended at a traffic stop in Missouri.

Judge: The evidence is strong, of 30 kilos of meth. Defendant has a previous bench warrant, a while ago. He denied he traveled to Mexico, and could go again. He will remain detained.

On April 25, 2024 Astorga's lawyer wrote in requesting less than 72 months when he is sentenced on May 9.

On May 2, the US Attorney's Office notably asked for "at least 60 months."

On May 9, Astorga was sentenced to 72 months.

The case is US v. Astorga, 23-cr-94 (Castel)
