For Armed Robbery of East Harlem Store Callender Had Bail Reversed Mulls June 12 Plea

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, May 13 – Saquan Callender was arrested and charged with the August 18 gunpoint robbery of a convenience store on E. 116 Street in East Harlem.

He was initially ordered released on $20,000 bond in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrates Court, which Inner City Press covers, often the only media there. That order was reversed in Part 1.

On October 11 Callender was formally indicted and his case wheeled out to new District Judge Dale E. Ho, seemingly his first case, at least criminal case, in SDNY.

On October 13, Judge Ho signed and docketed: "SCHEDULING ORDER as to Saquan Callender. It is hereby ORDERED that the parties appear for an arraignment and pretrial conference with the Court on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 10:30 AM, in Courtroom 905 of the Thurgood Marshall Courthouse, 40 Foley Square (Signed by Judge Dale E Ho on 10/13/23)."

That courtroom hadn't been used in some time...

Jump cut to May 1o, 2024, when Callendar's Federal Defender wrote in that "the parties continue to negotiate a pre-trial disposition" and will know by June 12. Judge Ho endorsed it, noting that if there is not resolution by June 12, a motion schedule will be set then. The July 15 trial was adjourned to October 7.

The case is US v. Callender, 23-cr-523 (Ho)
