Man Arrested March 15 For 5 Kilos of Cocaine Is Detained on Consent Pending Hiring Counsel

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 18  – A man arrested on March 15 on charged of trafficking five kilos or more of cocaine was belatedly presented on March 18 before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Gary Stein.

Inner City Press was there, the only civilian in the SDNY Magistrates courtroom.

A Criminal Justice Act lawyer said he was there pro bono, that the defendant was not eligible for free counsel but would soon be hiring his own.

In fact, he had spoken to the presumptively incoming counsel, who told him to not apply for bail, he would do it.

So the defendant was detained on consent, without prejudice.

The case is US v. Rodriguez, 24-mj-1110 (Stein).
