SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
March 19 – Charged with
shooting a gun from the
doorway of a bodega on Tremont
and Third Avenues in The
Bronx, Melquan Stewart was
presented and had a bond
hearing on March 19 before
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Magistrate Judge Gary Stein.
Inner City Press
was there, the only media in
the SDNY Mag
Court.
The
Assistant US Attorney
described the scene, including
a couple on a motor scooter
"festooned with heart-shaped
balloons" as, he said, Stewart
fired his gun.
He said
Steward claimed to have taken
the gun from a man who tried
to intervene in what he
thought was domestic violence.
But Stewart had a bullet
fitting the gun, a Luger, in
his pocket.
While Stewart's
daughter was in the back of
the courtroom, with a baby in
a stroller, Judge Stein said
the government had met his
burden on dangerousness, and
ordered detention.
His daugther, at
the end, called out "I love
you."
The case is US v.
Stewart, 24-mj-948 (Stein)
