SDNY
COURTHOUSE,
April 17 –
A Congolese man who says he
was a political prisoner there
while on US supervised release
after a bank fraud conviction
was ordered released again on
April 17, 2024 by U.S.
District Court for the
Southern District of New York
Magistrate Judge Katharine H.
Parker. Inner City Press was
there, the only media in the
SDNY Mag Court.
Jeanwilliam
Chizungu was sentenced in 2015
to a year and a day in prison
and two years of supervised
release. But during that two
years he stopped reporting to
probation. On April 17, the
AUSA said he had
absconded.
His new CJA
lawyer said no, he had been a
political prisoner in the DRC
but now lives and works in
Bridgeport,
Connecticut.
He said when Chizungu returned
to the US he found that both
his Probation officer and his
former CJA attorney Susan
Tipograph had retired.
The
Government asked for him to be
detained, but Judge Parker
said he can be released, once
his information including
suretor in Bridgeport are
verified.
The case
is US v. Chizungu,
17-cr-230 (Carter / Parker)
