Mayande Gowan Arrested at JFK Airport on Tax Charge Is Nearing A Guilty Plea in SDNY

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, May 7 – Mayande Gowon was arrested on Saturday night, September 23, 2023 at JFK airport on a 2022 federal indictment that had been sealed. In it he is accused of failing to pay over and account for payroll taxes while president of TGC Global in 2014 and 2015.

On September 25 he was brought before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Ona T. Wang. Inner City Press was there.

The AUSA was not asking for remand to the MDC, but demanded home detention.

The issue became whether Pre-Trial Services would have to inspect Gowon's temporary New Rochelle housing before he was released. The answer, after a break, was No.

Gowon, who also goes by Mayande Walker, while living in Kazakhstan, has been working for Telecommunications Development Corporation in DC. The Federal Defender said the firm works for the US Department of Homeland Security.

The AUSA said Gowon will probably lose his job. The Federal Defender reminded: Innocent until proven guilty.

On December 21 the US Attorney's Office wrote in opposing any loosening of conditions. Beyond his month to month lease and failure to contact his eldest daughter, they said, his passport has 200 stamps including from Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Jump cut to May 7, 2024 when Gowon's Federal Defender wrote in to adjourn a May 9 conference for 30 days, saying "the parties have made progress toward a resolution of this case but are still finalized the terms of a plea."

The case is US v. Gowon, 22-cr-361 (Oetken)
