EXCLUSIVE,
April 9 – A man who left New
Jersey to try to join Al
Shabaab, inspired or triggered
by the October 7 Hamas
terrorist attack on Israel and
its aftermath, argued to be
released on bail on December
29 in U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Magistrates Court.
Inner City Press
was there, the only media in
the SDNY Mag court, and live
tweeted, thread:
KARREM NASR, a US
citizen, was taken into
custody in Nairobi, Kenya on
Dec 14, 2023 and was
transported to the US
yesterday. Nasr is
led in by US Marshals.
Judge: You were
unemployed when you went
overseas? Nasr: I left my job.
Judge: You have $1700 in
savings and some community
college? Nasr: Yes. AUSA: We
seek detention.
Judge: I would
have to speak with the
parents. FD: I want a decision
today.
AUSA: Even
with Internet restriction, he
could see the Hamas Israel war
in the newspapers, they are
still a thing.
Judge:
These are terrorism charges...
You chose jihad over studying.
I order you detained.
On January 30,
Nasr appeared before the
assigned District Judge,
Analisa Torres, to whom
another bail application will
be made. Thread:
Marshals bring
him in and he waves at some
family members here in the
gallery.
All rise!
Judge: Any
discovery under CIPA
[Classified Information
Procedure Act]? AUSA: We'll
need a month. Judge: July 8.
Federal Defender: For a
conference?
Judge: No. For
the trial.
AUSA: Given the
volume of discovery, we need
90 days. Judge: I'll need to
push the trial to January 6
[2025] due to my calendar.
Federal Defender:
We're going to ask for bail
again, with his Social
Education records.
Judge: OK.
Adjourned.
On April 9, the
Federal Defender asked for
bail again, citing autism and
"the online relationship an
FBI confidential human source
cultivated with him as the
horrors of the escalating war
in Gaza unfolded merely hours
from where Karrem was residing
in Northern Egypt."
The case is US v.
Nasr, 24-cr-19 (Torres)
