Man Who Absconded from Arraignment in 2020 Case Now Pleads Guilty Still Detained

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon

SDNY MAG COURT EXCLUSIVE, May 7 -  In the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on December 21, 2022 a detention or bond proceeding was held by Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein on a man who absconded from his arraignment in a 2021 case, Domingo Beato-Estrella.

Inner City Press was present, the only media in the Mag Court. Related Mag Court live-tweeted thread (more on Patreon here) vlog here

Magistrate Judge Gorenstein asked if there would be a second indictment, for bail jumping. There hasn't been one yet, the AUSA replied.

Judge Gorenstein said, I assume you will be asking for detention, based on the past? Yes - and the defense lawyer consented to it.

  Beato-Estrella was detained.

Jump cut to May 7, 2024 when Beato-Estrella pled guilty to Counts 1s and 2s in the Magistrates Court - and remained detained, with an August 6 control date.

The case is US v. Beato-Estrella, 20-cr-324 (Hellerstein / Stein)
