In Sen Menendez Trial Jury Egypt Expert Can Talk Morsi but not Pharaohs Jury Almost Ready

by Matthew Russell Lee

SDNY COURTHOUSE, May 14 – Amid reports of investigation against Sen. Robert Menendez for taking gold bars, Inner City Press' sources on September 21 it to expect on Friday, September 22 an appearance in Federal court in Manhattan by Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian. This scoop was true.

Later a superseder was unveiled, including charges of bribes to act for Qatar...

On April 11, 2024 after Nadine Menendez and then the government asked for delay, to July or undefined, Judge Stein severed her case and reaffirmed May 6, Inner City Press thread

On Sunday night April 14 the US wrote in again asking for a delay to July, six page letter on Patreon here.

But Judge Stein told the parties to confer and report by April 16 at 1 pm. Then he set an April 17 conference, which Inner City Press live tweeted and dubbed "Berate-gate," thread

On April 19: "The Court grants the parties' request to adjourn the trial to May 13, 2024."

On April 26, the US reiterated that the discovery should remain Attorney's Possession Only, letter on Patreon here.

On May 13, jury selection began - but did not finish. At day's end, as tweeted by Inner City Press, Judge Stein said, "Prospective jurors, I'm going to ask you to come back tomorrow morning at 9:45 am, I have some questions the whole group."

A bit later, Menendez got into an car with FOP NJ plates.

On May 14 jury selection continued but was not yet completed, from the ending, thread:

Juror 42, I'm single. I have two sons, one is a bartender in Miami. My other son is in maintenance. Judge: Level of education? 42: High school Judge: Ma'am, we'll end with you. Juror 40: I have a masters in library science. NYT, WaPo, WNYC. Social media, Instagram

Judge Stein: Once I finish this round [tomorrow] lawyers will use their peremptories and we should have a jury by the end of the morning.

Judge Stein has come back, after the prospective jurors have left. Judge Stein: If all goes well, we'll have openings tomorrow. So you are entitled to my rulings. I am precluding Doctor Rosenbaum. It just doesn't stand up. The CPA? He can testify under strictures

Judge Stein: He can testify to Senator Menendez' known inflows and outflows. He's a CPA. The other expert on Egypt, he can speak about Sisi and the Muslim Brotherhood. And Morsi. But we're not going back to the Pharaohs. And nothing about the halal contract

Judge Stein: I'm going to file an opinion tomorrow denying Mr. Menendez' request for subpoenas under Rule 15. See you tomorrow.

The case is US v. Menendez, et al., 23-cr-490 (Stein)
